The
first explorer, Americo Vespucio, arrived in Fernando
de Noronha three years after the discovery of Brazil
in 1500. With volcanic origins, 26 km 2 of territorial
area and 21 islands around 540 kilometers of the mainland,
Fernando de Noronha is a tropical paradise in the Atlantic
Ocean.
Since 1988, Fernando de Noronha was established as a
national marine park and is protected as an environmental
reserve. For example, The Brazilian Institute of Environmental
Protection (Ibama) allows only 460 tourists in the area
daily. Fishing in the park is prohibited and swimming
is controlled on certain beaches because they have been
recognized as turtle and dolphin breeding areas or as
coral sanctuaries.
Thanks to the current, coming from Africa, the waters
at Fernando de Noronha are almost completely free of
floating sediments making this area one of the world's
best dive spots, with excellent visibility, even at
50 meters, and great year-round water temperatures. |
